Plascore processing requirements
for 14 panels
The requirements were updated to the following:
-
Cores for two panels are to be cut on each of the proposed saws that
Plascore intends to use in production. Once cut these cores are to
be measured for thickness variation using a depth gauge and measuring through
the honeycomb structure. Enough data points are to be taken to give
a good indication of the thickness variation over the entire core.
If the largest variation from maximum to minimum is < 0.010" Plascore
is to proceed to epoxy skins to cores. If cores exceed the above
variation, Plascore will contact Fermilab to discuss improvement possibilities.
Plascore will not proceed without prior approval from Fermilab.
-
Approved cores are to be further processed into completed panel assemblies.
During the pressing and curing operations Plascore will insure that the
press platens are clean and free epoxy drips or other materials that might
cause dents or marks on the panel skin surfaces. Plascore will take
efforts to insure that the platen surfaces remain flat and parallel during
the the pressing operation. Once the panels are cured Plascore will
measure the flatness of the panels produced by setting each panel vertically
on a long edge and using a straight edge, string, or the like, measure
the bend and bow both horizontally and vertically at enough places to characterize
the bend and bow in the panels. It is requested that Plascore mark
on each panel its position in the press (upper or lower), which side faces
up, which end was at the front (or back) of the press, and in what order
the panels were produced. We also request that Plascore record the
time and temperature cycle that each set of panels see during their cure
cycle. If agreeable to Plascore, at its option, Fermilab may elect
to visit Plascore once panels are completed to make final measurements
prior to Plascore shipping the panels to Fermilab.
Per telephone call from D. Eartly at 1:00 PM he was sending the above
request to Plascore for their comment and approval. Per fax from
Plascore to D. Eartly dated 9/17, Plascore agreed to our requirements.
-
Action Item: Ron to place Purchase Order
for 14 panels in accordance with agreed specifications per the fax copy
given to Ron on 9/23.
Panel Measurements at Fermilab
It was agreed that the 14 panels once received from Plascore
should be measured first on the Axxiom machine, with suction to determine
surface flatness on both sides, and thickness. Each should also be
measured in the free state to quantify the free state bend or bow in the
panels. It was also agreed that the 7 PNPI panels in Lab 8 should
be measured for bend and bow both before and after being machined on the
Gerber machine to ensure that the cutting operations do not alter panel
flatness characteristics.
-
Action Item: It is requested that the TD
Receiving Inspection Group take responsibility for making these measurements.
Coordination with Phyllis Deering is necessary.
Quality Assurance Measurements at
Plascore
Plascore will be required to make periodic core thickness measurements,
as well as free state panel bend and bow measurements, panel thickness
measurements, and panel flatness measurements with bow and bend removed.
-
Action Item: TD Material Controls
Group should coordinate with Nelson, Giorgio, and Dave Eartly to
plan what tooling to supply Plascore and what personnel support may be
needed.
